Top Ten Tuesday #36

This Week’s Theme: Top Ten ALL TIME Favourite Authors – not gunna lie. Don’t think I’ve even got ten! =/ I mean, I have to find authors that aren’t only autobuys but like find the ones that I personally think are awesome too!

1. J.R.R.Tolkien – the man, the master! What he wrote was so beautiful and so epic at the same time. He’s the reason I’m into fantasy! [pretty sure I read The Hobbit before Harry Potter!] and omg he was just a genius. Granted the reasons and reality behind his stories is heartbreaking but that also is what makes them that much more amazing!

J.R.R. Tolkien

2. Brandon Sanderson – he is a god! His writing is amazing, his stories epic- yes, yes, I’ve only read one of his books (shh!) but I knew even not 200 pages into the books, that this man was gunna do great things in the fantasy genre. And I’ve been proven right so far!

Brandon Sanderson

3. William Shakespeare – This is probably an odd one but I have to admit: I am a huge Shakespeare fan! I love the way he writes and because of the way he writes, the meaning sometimes seem completely different to what is written. He can do humour well, sarcasm well, existentialism.. I just really enjoy his work and need to read more of it!

William Shakespeare

—-

Not gunna lie, that is my list. C.S.Lewis isn’t on there because I was only interested in Narnia not him and his works. Same with JK Rowling; never gunna read anything she brings out that isn’t HP related. Lemoney Snicket: loved his books to death growing up but it’s been years and not read anything of his outside ASOUE. Terry Pratchett isn’t on here because I feel I need to read at least 10 of his books before I can be solid on him; I do love his writing and everything he stood up for etc. but I personally don’t feel I qualify to have him as a fav author just yet.

Same Time, Next Week!

Bookish Scenarios Tag

It’s Tag Thursday!! Do enjoy! ^_^

1.You have to get rid of all your books and you can only keep one from each of these genres – contemporary, fantasy, non-fiction and one other genre of your choosing. What books do you keep?

Contemporary: I’ma changing this to SF as I don’t read Contemporary. So the SF book I’d save:

Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)
Fantasy:

The Hobbit
Non-Fiction:

Peter Jackson: A Film-Maker's Journey
One Other:

Bridge to Terabithia

2. You’re at the bookstore and you hear a teenager telling their mom they don’t like to read, but their mom insists they pick something. You walk over and recommend a book you think is great for people who aren’t big on reading – what book is it?

If it’s a teenager now then clearly this is the answer:

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)

3. You’re not feeling yourself and need a pick me up. Which book do you read to put yourself in a great mood?

The Hobbit

4. You go back in time for a day to your teenage years. What book would you most likely have caught yourself reading?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) or Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom (Death Note, #1) or FanFiction

5. Your friend surprises you with a 4 day trip and you have 1 hour to pack. Which book do you bring to read on the way?

Only one book? You’re not being serious? I can pack shit loads in that one hour!… Okay, knowing my friends we’d probably take the trip abroad which means flights which means probably 12 hours in total travel time (going and coming back but if it was my ideal trip one way would take 12 hours!) and the book I’d read on the way would probably be Well of Ascension because I need that in my life asap!

The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2)

But of course this would be in the luggage anyway:

6. Your house has been robbed! Don’t worry – everyone is safe, but your bookshelf has been raided. What’s the book you really hope is safe?

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)

7. Your friend borrows a book and returns it in awful condition. Do you a) Just pretend you haven’t noticed b) Ask them to repurchase it or c) Secretly do the same to something of theirs

Is murder them not an option? I would definitely be doing B. I tell people who borrow or look after ANYTHING of mine: ‘You get even a scratch on it (books, DVDs, Magazines etc) and you’re buying a replacement’ and it’s the only time people actually take me seriously.

I tag… YOU!

This was fun xD

Top Ten Tuesday #35

ImageThis Week’s Theme: Top Ten Inspiring Quotes from Books

Ready for LoTR galore? Because that’s what I’m expecting xD I don’t think any of these need explanations really. It’s either it’s clearly obvious why they’re a favourite (either a famous life or an beautifully written line or both) or because they mean a hell of a lot to me or both! xD

1. A Dance with Dragons – George. R.R. Martin

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.

2. Something Like An Autobiography – Akira Kurosawa

There is nothing that says more about its creator than the work itself.

3. The Hobbit –  J.R.R.Tolkien

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.

4. The Fellowship of the Ring – J.R.R.Tolkien

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

5. The Fellowship of the Ring – J.R.R.Tolkien

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

6. The Final Empire – Brandon Sanderson

There’s always another secret.

7. Sourcery – Terry Pratchet

“And what would humans be without love?”
RARE, said Death.

8. The Hobbit – J.R.R.Tolkien

The road goes ever on and on.

9. A Song of Ice and Fire – George. R.R. Tolkien

Winter is coming.

10. The Fellowship of the Ring – J.R.R.Tolkien

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

What do you think? Got any better ones?

Game of Thrones Tag

In celebration of season 5 coming out tonight I thought I’d do this tag!

1. How did you discover the series/book?

Honestly, I saw the TV show first. I think I saw the first 2 seasons in early 2012 and I was just like ‘eh, I don’t get the hype’ watched season 3 as it aired and again, didn’t feel all that interested in it. Even during the red wedding, I wasn’t shocked and just sat there bored like ‘meh, glad they’re dead’ but for some reason Season 4 hooked me and I’ve since rewatched the previous seasons and started the first book last year and love it. I think it’s because I’m older now and understand politics a lot more and understand that fantasy isn’t always about constant magic and fantastical things.

2. Who is your favourite house apart from the Starks and Lannisters?

I don’t particularly like those two houses nor any other house…. I just have favourite characters like Arya, Tyrion…. Who else is decent …. Haha o dear xD Brienne, The Hound… Jon is…. sometimes cool… But I don’t really have a favourite house. Although House Greyjoy have a squid as their emblem ❤

3. Who is your favourite character from the House of Stark?

Arya. Sansa can go jump out the moon door seriously.

4. Who is your favourite character from the House of Lannister?

Tyrion!

5. Who is your favourite character?

Tyrion definitely.

6. Who is your least favourite character?

Dany (hella boring) and Sansa (hella boring). And Joffrey was always a ****.

7. What are your thoughts about the series/book?

What I’ve read of the books so far… honestly? Not exactly the best written book I’ve read, but the info in it is extensive and it’s definitely interesting to read.

8. If you could be one of the characters who would you be and why?

O jesus…. Who lives in the end? and isn’t raped or thrown into battle nor loses an arm nor dies but then comes back. I wanna be one of that character!

9. What is your favourite episode/season?
Favourite episode… Maybe 4×09 The Watches On The Wall…

10. Who is your Game of Thrones crush?

Hmmm…. Who I find the most attractive… Oberyn xD

11. What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming season/book?

Dany and Sansa dying. I wait the probs won’t happen -_- besides that… I am seriously looking forward to Arya and Tyrions travels and also if the White Walkers make another appearance! =]

Hope you enjoyed that!

UnHaul #1

I started separating books that I’m keeping and not keeping as I go back to Japan in less than 4 months, so it’s been tough but so far I’ve gone through my shelves twice so far [last week and at Christmas] but because I’m not reading a lot at the moment, the unhaul is not very big yet. But might as well post some here now =]

P1020221 P1020222 P1020223 P1020349 P1020350 P1020357 P1020360 P1020365 P1020366 P1020367 P1020368 P1020369 P1020370 P1020371 P1020372 P1020373 P1020378 P1020379

Whatcha think? Some I have read, some I’ve tried and gave up, and some I just have attempted. There’s probably a lot more to come!

Talk Again Soon Maybe! =]

What’s The Story Saturday? #4

whatthestorysaturdays

A meme-thing created by me. All are welcome to join!

Rules:

Pick a book cover (preferably one where you don’t know the plot).
Guess what the story e.g. who’s our mc; female? male? what genre is it? what happens?.
[Optional >] After that actually read up about the synopsis and comment on whether you think yours is better xD

Week 4’s Pick Is:

whatthestorysaturday3

My Story: A mid-twenties woman is secretly and investigator and is currently on a case. However, her family and friend’s don’t know what her ‘night job’ is so she has to keep the mission a secret. Maybe something to do with a new drug called velvet which is linked to Nuclear Power/Bombs? She’s sassy but very straight faced and sees herself above men. Time zone is… either 1920/1930s or modern day.

The Actual Synopsis: Samantha Donaldson’s family has always done its duty for the British Crown. In the midst of World War I, seventeen-year-old Sam follows in their footsteps, serving her country from the homefront as a Girl Guide and messenger for the intelligence organization MI5. After her father disappears on a diplomatic mission, she continues their studies of languages, high-level mathematics, and complex puzzles and codes, hoping to make him proud.

After Thoughts: I was close with investigator and her being a spy! I also said 1920s and this is WWI so just before it xD but everything else is like completely different. I keep writing or guessing the stories are about detectives and mysteries so I think that’s my brain telling me to get it all out on paper and finally write a mystery novel… but while I love Japanese detective shows, I’ve never read a mystery novel. Got any recs?

The Glass Magician by Charlie. N. Holmberg

The Glass Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy, #2)
First Book Review

Quickie Review [Non-Spoiler]: 3 stars.
This continues Ceony’s story from the first book (The Paper Magician). While it is not as enticing as the first book and is more heavy on the romance, I loved being back in the world and the adventure was great! Also, it was pretty suspenseful at times! =) I found a few gorgeously written lines too, for example:

You’re a candle that won’t be snuffed. And now the darkest parts of this world can see you. And they don’t tolerate the light.

But it felt a lot slower than the first book and the ending seemed a tad broken up and anticlimactic. Nevertheless, the ending did leave me excited for the final book! =]

Have you read this book or started the series? What did you think?
