Angelfall by Susan Ee

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)

Quickie Review:  3 out of 5

I enjoyed this book a lot! I’ve never read an Angel book – no wait, I have read ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’ but did not like it but not because of the angels. I didn’t think they’d be my thing even though I love Supernatural, and I ended up enjoying this book! I really liked the amount of mystery it gave, I like how it didn’t shy away from topics like sex, worrying about being raped and stuff like that, it was gritty and dark, something I personally rarely see in YA and it made is all feel a lot more real. Josiah was by far my favourite character! ^_^ The writing was easy, I loved the world building – especially with the club and the angel fashion aspects.

My only real negative is Peryn, I didn’t like her. Her only redeeming quality is her fighting skill but my god, she has no common sense what so ever and just made dumbass decision after dumbass decision. There is nothing good about her except the fact she can fight. I also hated how Peryn felt the need to describe Raffe body all the damn time! A 17 year old girl can think of a thousand more things before repeatidly mentioning someones body! -_- AND, I am certainly not feeling the romance. I don’t see any chemistry there at all.

A fellow GR-er pointed out and made me realised that this is the typical YA plot of ‘save the sibling’ and also, I felt a similarity to The Hunger Games where Katniss is knocked out and misses as the action -_- Yes Peryn missed out on the biggest juiciest part of the action, but I’m so glad she was still conscious for it and witnessed it – unlike Katniss -_-

There’s a lot of things intruging me about this series and so I will definitely carry on! I seriously wanna know wtf those scorpion things were! EWWW! xD

What’s The Story Saturday? #9

It’s 31 minutes to midnight and I’ve only just remembered to do today’s WTSS! O dear o_O

A meme-thing created by me. All are welcome to join!

Pick a book cover (preferably one where you don’t know the plot).
Guess what the story e.g. who’s our mc; female? male? what genre is it? what happens?.
[Optional >] After that actually read up about the synopsis and comment on whether you think yours is better xD

This Week’s Cover:

My Story: I was watching Relic Hunter last night and I love Tomb Raider and The Mummy, so guess what story ideas are running through my head here?! xD BUT the tag line mentioned magic. O dear I am stuck… Okay so a magic, lost relic perhaps? ‘Magic caused the war’ so previously magic was in the world but due to the overpowering use of magic, war broke out between…. two different types of magical beings and it got so ‘nuclear’ that after it magic was forbidden. BUT now there’s a… evil magic person trying to control the world and only…. I’m guessing this is MG or YA so three kids have to go on a mission and travel to find the magic item that will save the world! And it is… the eye of…Osiris? xD OR! The Relic Guild is the good magic side group of people that combat the bad guy!

The Actual Synopsis: It was said the Labyrinth had once been the great meeting place, a sprawling city at the heart of an endless maze where a million humans hosted the Houses of the Aelfir. The Aelfir who had brought trade and riches, and a future full of promise. But when the Thaumaturgists, overlords of human and Aelfir alike, went to war, everything was ruined and the Labyrinth became an abandoned forbidden zone, where humans were trapped behind boundary walls a hundred feet high.Young Clara struggles to survive in a dangerous and dysfunctional city, where eyes are keen, nights are long, and the use of magic is punishable by death. When a strange man named Fabian Moor returns to the Labyrinth, Clara learns that magic serves a higher purpose and that some myths are much more deadly in the flesh. The only people Clara can trust are the Relic Guild, a secret band of magickers sworn to protect the Labyrinth. To truly defeat their old nemesis Moor, mightier help will be required. To save the Labyrinth – and the lives of one million humans – Clara and the Relic Guild must find a way to contact the worlds beyond their walls.

After Thoughts: This was my worst attempt, right? Okay so it has an Attack on Titan feel, if Attack on Titan was about magic and gods, and not human-eating-giants. My second guess on the novel was similar! I do love the cover of this book but not the novel for me…

What did you guess? Have you read this? What did you think?

This Week’s Cover:

My Story: I’m thinking two things. A. Three kids find a trap door in their basement one day and decide to follow this ladder down, down, down, and it leads them into a magical world and a magical adventure. Most likely getting this jewel for one group of underground beings so they can defeat the bad group underground. I imagine these creatures have insect like parts to them but are overall human forms with dirty faces due to the mud. B. Nuclear explosion and three people survived in a bunker underground and it’s this suspense thing and them being trapped in this bunker with no knowledge of what’s going on outside and the whole premise is: do they dare risk opening the hatchet and finding out of their world, as they knew it, is destroyed. And when they do open the hachet and discover what’s happened (I’m assumed ruins and an army of another country has taken over) and thus the ‘fallout’ of the war begins.

The Actual Synopsis: In the summer of 1962, the possibility of nuclear war is all anyone talks about. But Scott’s dad is the only one in the neighborhood who actually prepares for the worst. As the neighbors scoff, he builds a bomb shelter to hold his family and stocks it with just enough supplies to keep the four of them alive for two critical weeks. In the middle of the night in late October, when the unthinkable happens, those same neighbors force their way into the shelter before Scott’s dad can shut the door. With not enough room, not enough food, and not enough air, life inside the shelter is filthy, physically draining, and emotionally fraught. But even worse is the question of what will — and won’t — remain when the door is opened again.

After Thoughts: So my second story was pretty spot on! Nuclear war/bombs: I got that. In a shelter underground: got that. Questioning whether to open the door or not: got that! Although I thought it’d take place in the near future and I had at least one teenage blonde girl as my character in it. I was getting a 5th Wave feel off it. So, once again, I was pretty spot on! Which, once again, means either authors are being too predictable or my creative juices are top notch! xD AND, I actually like my first story that I came up with for this cover, so I may pursue it in time! xD

What did you think the story behind the cover was? Have you read the book? What did you think of it?

19th June 2015 #FridayReads

YAHOO!!! How is everyone? Let’s go on with FR!!! I sound really happy don’t I? Quite the opposite: it’s nearly 12pm and I’ve only been up 3 hours after a 9 hour sleep and seriously just want to go back to bed xD rather tired for some reason… but anyways!!!

I have decided to put The Vampire Lestat on hold for now. The point of the story is at a dip and I’m really not in the mood to read something so sombre and dark at the moment. So I am concentrating on finishing Order of the Pheonix!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5)

I’ve also been powering through GANTZ these past two weeks and have about 100 chapters left til I’m done! 100 chapters should take me about… 4 hours tops? Which is very exciting and it’s still very interesting to read! So fingers crossed it’ll be done this week!

IF I get through those this week, I am putting all my focus on finishing Angelfall. I saw a fellow GR friend post that she finished this in 4 hours?! o_O I’ve been reading it for over a week and am only 16% through but that’s due to me falling asleep after reading 2 pages of it a night because I read it in the dark (on my kindle) while led in my sleeping position xD

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)

My reading has been so blegh this month and I think it’s because I’ve been so busy travelling and sorting my visa out and getting my suitcase ready and getting rid of things and putting other things in storage. So looks like I won’t be reaching Mistborn this month ='[ But I must must must finish these three in the next 11 days – SERIOUSLY! -_-

Have a good weekend! What are your FR?

Ladle Rat Rotten Hut (The Grimm Diaries Prequels #4) by Cameron Jace

Ladle Rat Rotten Hut (The Grimm Diaries Prequels, #4)

Quickie Review:
3 out of 5

Once again Jace manages to spin another twist on the fairytale genre (and again, one that didn’t come out of Once Upon a Time!). We follow Little Red Riding Hood this time. There was mystery about why Red couldn’t say her real name, there were mysteries about why she was so terrified of wolves (even though she hadn’t visited her grandmother yet). The characters were offbeat making it suspenseful and reminding you that something just wasn’t right. I loved the ‘language’ that was in this story, and what the mystery turned out to be was very interesting. But I felt the mystery perhaps dragged a little. While I did enjoy the mystery, it felt like the mystery wasn’t confusing enough to keep me non-agitated for the entire story. By about half way through I was like ‘come on with the reveal’. But that’s most likely personal preference or my slow reading speed >.<
